Kundasang War Memorial

The Kundasang War Memorial was built in memory of the thousands of British & Australian soldiers who died during the Second World War at the prisoner camps in Sabah as well as along the forced marches from Sandakan to Ranau dubbed The Death Marches.

Of the 2400 British and Australian prisoners of war captured, only 6 survived to tell the tale of the physical torture they had to endure during captivity. Countless locals who tried to assist the soldiers were also killed by the invading Japanese army. Only six Australians survived to tell the horror. There were no English survivors.

The ‘fort-like’ design of the Memorial was by local resident architect, J.C. Robinson. It has 4 interlocking but separate gardens built on ascending levels along a hillside, to represent the homelands of those who died.

The first of which is the slightly bare looking Australian Garden but with a cute signboard though .......

From here, you'll have to climb a flight of stairs which will take you to the English Garden - with a few of different roses greeting you.

As you continue walking, you'll get to the third garden which is called Borneo garden with its displays of Borneo's native plants.

Last bu not least is the Contemplation Garden with a reflection pool & pergola - the best of all four for it's serenity & fabulous views.

You have to walk up all the way to the last garden as this is where the real gems lie. We nearly missed this interesting part of the park as we thought it would one common garden like the rest. It's from this point where you'll be able to see the view of the whole of Kundasang town - a view worth seeing.

The entrance to this park, by the way is not free. The entrance fee is RM3 for adults & RM 1 for children and is open daily between 8.30 am to 5.30 pm.

Desa Dairy Farm

A trip to Kota Kinabalu wont be complete without visiting Kundasang. Kundasang is the closest village to Mount Kinabalu which has a panoramic view of the mountain. Its location provides the place a cool climate & a wonderful refreshing cool air. Personally, I find Kundasang full of simplicities. The life of the people's here is very laid back & they take life as it is.

Among the attractions in Kundasang are The Desa Dairy Farm, Kinabalu National Park & the War Memorial. Besides these interesting places, Kundasang is also a famous spot for fresh fruits & vegetables due to its cool climate.

The first place we went to upon reaching this town is no other that the Desa Dairy Farm. This is a dairy cattle that produced pasteurized fresh milk & is the largest contributor of fresh milk in Sabah. Fresh milk are available here at a much cheaper price. Anyway I cant comment much about the milk though since I am not a milk-drinker. However according to my dad, they are damn good !

This dairy farm I would say, is the best place in Sabah to be at. It's a must-see place that shouldnt be missed in anybody's itinerary for their Sabah trip. Desa Dairy Farm is located at the foothills of Mount Kinabalu. A herd of the Friesian cattles wandering on the fields somehow or rather makes me feel as though I am in New Zealand instead. The scenery of the green meadows stretching as far as to the foothill of the mountain offers a magnificent view - so beautiful that you might forget to breath for a few seconds seeing it !

Smart cows, aren't they?

If you are coming from Kota Kinabalu, head over to Kundasang War Memorial & go straight downhill and uphill while keeping your eyes to the left. You'll then see a small wooden guard post that sells the entrance tickets. When you see the Desa Dairy Farm signboard just turn left and you are on the right track. The place is quite secluded & hidden.

The milking process

This farm is open to public between 8.30 am to 5.30 pm, with an entrance fee of RM3/person. Besides the view, visitors can also see the milking process done at the centre. I'm not quite sure of the milking hours though, but we were lucky that day as we got there just on time. It's in indeed an impressive sight seeing those cows obediently lining up to the milking station without having anybody to guide them.

TM Resort Kundasang

This is where we stayed while in Kundasang - TM Resort Kundasang a.k.a Sri Intan Kundasang. It was pre-booked by En. Kamis for us. This particular hotel is one of the many hotels owned by Telekom Malaysia. It is situated in the middle of Kundasang town - just on top of the hills nearby the vegetables stalls.

Thanks to En. Kamis for getting us a cheaper rate for the chalet. We paid RM 90/nite for 1 Queen bed + 2 singles, which is very, very reasonable. Though the chalet is a bit run down, but it was not that bad. For the price we pay, it is considered more than worth it - especially with the wonderfully beautiful views from the balcony. For TM's employee, the rate is much, much lower - as low as RM30/nite, I've been told.

Among the facilities that is provided in the chalet are TV (with Astro), water-heater, electric kettle & towels. Noticed that there's neither air-conditioning nor fan being provided. The weather there is chilly enuff that you dont need any of those at all - especially at night. I dont think anyone of us would even dare to touch the water should no heater being provided - it was like ice water, for God's sake !

View from the balcony

Those who are planning to visit Kundasang, could consider this place as one of the options for the lodging. Details of the resort can be obtained here.

Kota Kinabalu 2010 - Part II

A glimpse of the mountain - pic. taken from the car on the way to Kundasang

I was planning to continue writing about my recent trip to KK over the weekend but then I was so into the relax mode that I couldnt even turn on my lappie. This weekend was one of the best weekend ever - after many, many long & tiring weekends before. It's a weekend I'm so looking forward to. I finally managed to stretch all my tired & restless muscles for two solid days ! Such a wonderful week !

Ok, back to my KK stories. As mentioned earlier, the journey from KK town to Kundasang would take approximately 2 1/2 hrs through a winding road up the hills ( or mountain? ). It pretty much resembled the road from Simpang Pulai to Cameron Highlands of which in both events had make me really sick. This is a common problem to a person who normally sit behind the wheels. The moment they became the passenger & had to sit at the back, their body systems get haywire.

Our first stop is at Pekan Nabalu - a very small town with lots of stalls selling handicrafts, fruits & local products. It's the right spot to stop for a short break. Not too far from this place, we were then brought to this one clear & open area where we could could clearly see the tallest mountain in South East Asia - Mount Kinabalu. It was such a remarkable sight that no words could ever described it. Looking at it gave me a sense of satisfaction & pleasure, now that I could tell the whole world that I've seen it with my own eyes - the MOUNTAIN, that is. I just wished I could climb it some day........

Kota Kinabalu 2010 - Pt. I

After been planning the trip for close to a year, we finally making it a reality last weekend. Sabah is one of the state I've never set foot before - apart from Perlis, that is. Both of my sister & myself have been quite tied up with work that we dont really have a complete itinerary for this trip. Nevertheless, we are quite certain it's gonna be an enjoyable one considering the fact that we always had fun being together as family.

The flight to Kota Kinabalu took approximately 2 1/2 hours & lucky us, flight AK5102 arrived KK International Airport right on time ( 1200 hrs) that day. I've always hated flying - I mean, being in a plane. 2 1/2 hours seems like 6 hours to me as I've been turning & tossing on my seat trying to sleep though I'm quite sure I wont be able to, as always.

At the airport, we've been greeted & welcomed by my dad's acquaintance, En. Kamis who is a local Sabahan. We are relying on him (& his wife, Kak Wok) to give us the tour around Kota Kinabalu. In the earlier plan, we thought of renting a car & drove ourselves around KK like most of the tourist did. With the help of this couple, at least we dont have to worry about getting ourselves lost especially when the driver ( me) has a terrible sense of directions. Drive - that I can but to get to the right destination, that I cant promise....hehehehe.

After we had lunch, we stopped at the City Mosque to perform our prayers. The City Mosque is located at Likas Bay, at the north coastal highway. It is a beautiful mosque with great architecture and it is said that, in some ways it resembles the design of the al-Nabawi Mosque (The Prophet´s Mosque) in Madinah, Saudi Arabia. Another interesting fact about the mosque is its location where it's been built on a man-made lagoon, which creates a feeling that the mosque is floating above the water.

We then continued our journey to Kundasang as planned. En. Kamis owned a Toyota Avanza which is just enough to accommodate all 6 of us (including his wife). Being in that van felt like a real life roller coaster especially with the winding roads which goes up & down the hills all the way to Kundasang. All of us were extremely stunned with the way En. Kamis drove - he is one crazy driver ! Our stomach cringe every time he overtook the car ahead at sharp corners or while climbing up the hill. In my head, I could visualize the next day's headlines which reads like : "A Family Trip Turned Tragedy In KK"......huhuhu.

To be continued ............. (when I could find the time)

Ramadhan Al-Mubarak 1431H

I was quite sick yesterday that I couldnt write any entry though I really wanted to. Anyway, it's better late than never, isnt it ?

Therefore, I would like to wish all my fellow Muslim readers a happy Ramadhan & selamat berpuasa. I would also like to take this opportunity to apologize for whatever I've written ( those men-bashing entries especially), intentionally or unintentionally. May this holy month of Ramadhan brings us more prosperity, faith, satisfaction and divine love for Allah.

Anyway, these were my menu for my buka puasa yesterday. Drool overrrrr ........

Would You Die For Me?

I was not feeling well yesterday & therefore was on medical leave. From morning, I've been very busy going back & forth to the toilet - not that it's too dirty that it needs to be repeatedly cleaned. Apparently, my tummy decided to teach me a lesson that I cant stop "producing". The whole day I was in & out of the toilet till I dont have anything more to discharge.

Feeling bad for her sick mum, Marsya then told me not to cook anything for her breakfast this morning. A nugget will do, she said. But I would be feeling very bad if I just fry you the nuggets for breakfast, I replied. Nugget, sausage, chicken drummets etc, to me are unhealthy breakfast which I can only tolerate once a week the most. Marsya is being kind to me by asking me to break the rules - which was very sweet of her actually.

"That's the problem with you, mummy. You love me too much that frying me a nugget for breakfast is like a sin to you," she answered. "Marsya, I only have you & nobody else. Obviously all the love in me is only poured to you solely. I'd die for you if I have to, you know," I said. The moment I finished that sentence, Marsya started crying. "Mummy, I am so sorry......I know you would die for me but I dont think I could do the same to you. I dont wanna die....huhuhu," she said.

Frankly, if a guy said that to me - I wouldnt be bothered at all. No grudge, no frustration, no nothing. But when it comes from the mouth of my own daughter, I cant help but to feel a slight of disappointment. I know she's only 11 & just being honest with me. And I also know that doesnt mean she didnt love me with all her heart. It was something I never expect coming from her.

Anyway, it's just a form of expression. A figure of speech that is. Even if she's willing to die for me, I am not gonna let her. I need to be fair to her as well. She's only a kid & she still got a long way to go (as compared to her mummy). She got the whole world waiting to be explored & I cant take that away from her.

Come to think of it, it's kind of funny the way she expressed it to me with tears running on her cheek. I know she felt really bad as well for it'll surely break my heart. But then, at that age I dont think she even knows how to tell white lies. And I'm glad she didn't.

Ruz Aladdin Restaurant

I've been very, very busy since last week which leaves me with no choice but to desert this beloved blog of mine. There are just too many things in line with so little time left to do it. I'll be holidaying to KK this coming weekend & will only be back on Ramadhan's eve. And speaking of fasting month, I haven't even finalized the 30 days breaking fast menu yet. There you go - I could see the panic button started to blink already !

I've lined up a list of things that I should be doing last weekend, which includes completing the breaking fast menu, packing for my KK trip, cleaning up the house & cleaning my mini fish pond. These are some of the many things I need to wrap up before Ramadhan steps in. But then, everything ground to a halt since I have to entertain my BFF who came all the way from Kuantan last weekend. Not that I'm grumbling, NO I certainly am NOT, since me too had a tremendous fun with her company.

So now, I'm left with a few more days to accomplish all those stalled missions. Prioritize is something I have to do since there's not much time left. And the menu is absolutely top priority. My oh my ! How I'd wish I could have more than 24 hours in a day !

In today's entry, I'm gonna write about this makan place me & my frens dined last Friday. It is called Ruz Aladdin Restaurant. Nasi Briyani lovers in Ampang would have known this place for sure coz that's what they are famous for. It seems that their Nasi Briyani is one of the best in town. Well, I am in no position to comment on that since I dont actually like Nasi Briyani. I cant take the milky ghee taste in it. Well, you can take a person out from a kampung but that doesnt mean you've taken out the kampung out of her !

The talked of the town Briyani Kaki Kambing - RM 25.00

Curry Mee - RM 9.90

Rojak Buah - RM 6.00

Chicken Chop - RM 18.90

I had Sup Ekor while Marsya settled down with of her fave, Curry Mee. My soup was okay with a generous amount of ox tails as compared to some places where you'll have to dig through the onions & tomatoes to find the tails. The Curry Mee however, was just a so-so dish. If I were to taste it blindfolded, I wont even know it's a Curry Mee. Though the name is Curry Mee, I couldnt detect any taste of curry at all. It's either they didnt put any curry powder in it or my taste bud has gone bonkers !

Faces of hope......before the arrival of the food

Anyway, one thing you can be sure of is that you wont leave the place with an empty stomach. Their portion of food was reasonably huge. For a small eater like me & Marsya, one dish is more than enuff for both of us. The oxtail soup was supposed to be my starters but end up being the main course instead - especially when it comes with 2 slices of thick bread as well.

Ruz Aladdin is definitely a place when you have a craving for Nasi Briyani. I would like to recommend the Goat's Leg Nasi Briyani - though it's a bit pricey but it certainly worth every cents you're paying for. But then to those who doesnt eat lamb / mutton, there are still lots of other varieties to choose from - chicken, prawn, beef or fish.

Faces of satisfaction....burrppppp !!!

And it's not only Nasi Briyani they have there, in fact their options are quite diversified - from locals all the way to westerns. It's like a mini food court with a range of food arrays. That's why a non Nasi Briyani eater like me & Marsya can still dine here. Those who would like to try out this restaurant, here's the address :

Lot 1243, Jalan Ulu Kelang
Batu 4, Ampang Point
68000 Ampang

Tel. # : 03 - 4251 6463
Operating Hours : 11.00 am - 11 pm

Sekinchan Ikan Bakar

After a long break (to give way to the Fifa World Cup 2010), the Celibacy Club has been officially re-enacted last Friday. The destination this time was Sekinchan Ikan Bakar Restaurant. Though the name is Sekinchan which is a small town in the state of Sekangor, it's actually situated in Taman Setiawangsa, Ampang. The very crowded part of Taman Setiwangsa that is.

There are 2 ways to get to this place - either via the Middle Ring Road II or Jalan Jelatek, Ampang road. Since MRR2 is forever prone with traffic jam, I opted for the other route which is not that much of a difference as compared to the MRR2. After 40 mins battling with the traffic, we reached the place @ approximately 9 pm. As mentioned earlier, the restaurant is located at the busiest part of the area & looking for a parking spot that night was a real pain in the ass.

The crowd at the restaurant was reasonably huge as well. I'm quite sure it's due to the "promotions" they got from TV3 where they have been featured in the recent episode of the Jalan2 Cari Makan series last Sunday. It's a good thing that the restaurant is quite spacious to accommodate all its patrons comfortably.

Overall, in terms of restaurant's setup & facilities, theirs are not that bad. Apart from having the ample spaces, they also have this big screen TV & above all, while having their food customers will be entertained by the performance of their live band. It was a big restaurant with a number of counters - fresh seafood counter, BBQ counter, Ulam counter, nasi lemak counter& of course, the cashier counter.

In my honest opinion, the food is a bit too pricey - especially with their super-slow service. We ordered squids, fish & cockles which took them more than an hour to deliver. I guess that's where they got the name Sekinchan from. The time taken to prepare the food will be as tho they have to fetch the seafood all the way from Sekinchan it seems.

These drinks are called "Jumbo Juice" - RM8 each.

Imagine, we started ordering @ 9.30 pm & we only got to eat close to 11 pm. Rather than having dinner, we've ended up with supper instead ~ big sigh ~. Another mistake we made (apart from choosing this particular restaurant to dine in), was to complain their slow service to the wrong person. There's this old chap aged somewhere late forties or maybe early fifties, who simply cant stop talking when the only thing we've asked was our food. This guy could talked & talked as if there's no tomorrow it seems. It was so bad that we have to avoid any eye contacts with him every time he passed by our table - coz once started, he could never stopped.

Basically, what they have here is plain rice or nasi lemak, paired with variety of grilled seafood. The nasi lemak was quite good actually especially with the sambal kerang ( or is it "rendang kerang" since there's stripes of daun kunyit in it). Unfortunately I've to give way to K.Mimi on the sambal kerang as there's only one portion left.

As for the seafood, this is what we took : ikan keli, squids & cockles. For these seafood, you'll have to personally handpick them from an array of seafood at the counter. There are varieties of seafood available, all the way from prawns, squids, fish, crabs, lala & cockles. Once you've made the selections, you'll be directed to the weighing counter where all the seafood will be weighed & priced. Then, just go back to your table & wait for at least 1 hour before you'll get re-united with your seafood !

All & all, it's place I dont think I would go for a second time. Firstly, the food is just not worth waiting for. It's not that great of a food & practically nothing to shout about. Secondly, I feel that it's a bit over-priced. Imagine, 2 medium sized squid can cost RM16 & 2 small sized catfish is priced at RM18.

With that amount of price & time of waiting, one might as well drive all the way to Umbai, Melaka for a much, much more satisfying seafood dish !
