English With An Accent

As compared to other Asian countries (Singapore excluded), Malaysians should be grateful as the majority of us can speak English very well. Some of the pakcik & makcik can even speak this international language though it wont be that perfect but good enough to converse & relay the messages to others.

If you go to other Asian countries like Japan, Korea, Taiwan or Thailand, you'll be facing hard time communicating with them. Majority of the people there doesnt know a single word of English - even their youngsters too - let alone the pakcik & makcik.

What I'm gonna blog today is not about how well Malaysians speaks English but more on how they speak the language. If you noticed, there are two types of English-speaking community in our country :

1)    The genuine ones
2)    The wannabes

Ok, lets start with the first ones - the genuine group. This group belongs to the people who were born & breed abroad where everybody around them speaks with an accent. English with Mat Salleh accent is usually acquired after years of living in a Mat Salleh's country. It's quite natural to adopt an accent after being exposed to another culture for a certain period of time - it's a form of adaptation, I would call it.

Some of these people dont even leave the country but the people around them speaks that way. Their dad / mum is an expatriate for instant. Or they went to an international school where all their friends speaks with an accent.

But if you've been living in Malaysia for 20 years then went to Britain for a year & came back speaking like Brit. 5 years or more is okay but 1 year? And to make it worse, they act as if they were born English as well, which basically means emulating the English personality / lifestyle. I don't mind if they emulate the good, beneficial aspects of the English culture though but please dont be a wannabe. No matter how interested you are in a culture, it takes several years (obviously more than a year) to move from one refined accent to the other.

I have an acquaintance who speaks in deep Mat Salleh accent - though she has never been more than 7 days to any Mat Salleh countries and sure enough, she's adapting the Mat Salleh's lifestyle as well. Okay, she's been working with an International company for years but so did I. The only thing I am lacking is a Mat Salleh boyfriend like her (unfortunately my "asset" is not abundance enough to attract one). She's now married to her boyfie & her accents gets thicker by the days - which I believe was greatly assisted by the "fluids transfer" between them hahaha.

A lot of us really cant stand her accent coz they sounded so made up & fake. There's one time where a non-Malay speaks Bahasa Melayu with her & she still responded in English (with pride) which really confused us. It's not that she cant speak Malay - she can even speaks Malay with the local dialects for God's sake. It's just that speaking English with the Mat Salleh accent makes her feel that she's one level up in the local social hierarchy, I supposed.

Another scenario I would like to share here which happens in my own working place. The nature of our work requires us to speak with the kwailos all the time. There's this one colleague of mine who would automatically change his accent whenever that needs arise. From an Ah Beng he suddenly transforms himself to Andrew & he thought he was making an impression by doing so but little did he knows that he's just making a fool out of himself !

My point here is that speaking in English with an accent doesnt place you at a special rank in the local social hierarchy. Neither would you gain more respect from others. In fact, would end up being the gossip material among your peers. What matters most is the perfection of your English in terms of grammar & pronunciation.

To those who naturally speaks English with the Mat Salleh accent, just continue being yourself & be proud of it. And to those who are just faking it, please dont over do it coz for all I know, you've just turn yourself into a real loser !

Stronger

You know the bed feels warmer
Sleeping here alone
You know I dream in color
And do the things I want

You think you got the best of me
Think you've had the last laugh
Bet you think that everything good is gone
Think you left me broken down
Think that I'd come running back
Baby you don't know me, cause you're dead wrong

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger
Stand a little taller
Doesn't mean I'm lonely when I'm alone
What doesn't kill you makes a fighter
Footsteps even lighter
Doesn't mean I'm over cause you're gone

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, stronger
Just me, myself and I
What doesn't kill you makes you stronger
Stand a little taller
Doesn't mean I'm lonely when I'm alone

You heard that I was starting over with someone new
They told you I was moving on, over you

You didn't think that I'd come back
I'd come back swinging
You try to break me, but you see

Thanks to you I got a new thing started
Thanks to you I'm not the broken-hearted
Thanks to you I'm finally thinking about me
You know in the end the day you left was just my beginning
In the end...

The above is the lyrics to the song Stronger by Kelly Clarkson. I love every line of the lyrics - they are just so powerful & amazing that it sent chills down to my spine when I first heard it.

Love this lyrics / song so much that I am dedicating it to all the men who have made an appearance in my life and end up fucking it up. As much as I hate them, I owed them a lot for giving me the valuable experiences that makes me as strong as I am now - what doesnt kill me makes me a fighter.

Though Kelly Clarkson is the original singer to this song, I am putting the video from the Glee casts (which was performed during the Regionals in Season 3) since it was from Glee that I first heard the song.

Enjoy !

Draw Something

Draw Something - the new app that has taken the world of smartphones by storm. If you love playing Pictionary as a board game with friends, now you can doodle away mobile style with Draw Something. It is a simple and intuitive game that tests your artistic skills.

Developed by OMGPOP, this online game is available to both IOS and Android platforms. Players used their phones as a canvas; their fingers as paintbrush. You can play either with your friends or even strangers, taking turns to draw pictures; to guess what the opponent has drawn. You can pick from three options, varying in difficulty, and win coins if their partner correctly guesses what the drawing depicts.

There's both a free and a paid version of the game. The paid version eliminates ads, adds about 2,000 more words, and gives you 400 free coins (you can also opt to buy coins separately if you'd rather not wait to earn them). Those who play a lot may want to put down money for the paid version, as there are only so many times you can stand having to draw Lady Gaga.

It was Lin who first came to me begging to download this app into my phone so that she could play the game with me. I was a bit reluctant at first knowing how much I despise computer / phone games. But after much persuasion & assurance from Lin that this game is a bit different from the rest, I finally agree to download it into my phone.

True enough, like others I was bitten by the Draw Something bug too. I quickly got semi-addicted (not fully yet so far) to this drawing games, though I must admit that I am a very bad artiste huhuhu.

Here are the collections of my drawings which I considered as the best to my standard wahahaha :

Not so bad lah kan my drawings tu? But of course if you compare to the below drawings I found in the net, mine are just so crappy ! I really cant imagine how people can actually draw these on their phones - it's just too impossible to draw something so impressive like these using just the tip of your fingers.....it must be the Stylus pen they are using. Honestly, if I were given the Stylus to draw, I still couldnt draw as perfect as these :

Luckily none of my drawing buddy are as good as these people - otherwise I would be too embarrassed to even play the game with them. Anyway just for the fun of it, can you guess what these two drawings are ? For your info, I failed to guess these two drawings - it was too confusing especially the first one.

Have fun guessing peeps !!

Silicone Moulds

I got these lovely silicone moulds from Ija & Lin for my 42nd birthday recently.

It was really unexpected & an awesomely pleasant surprise when Ija handed me those bright, striking moulds. I still  remembered showing her those moulds few weeks before & telling her how much I'd love to have them in my kitchen.  And now all those moulds are finally mine. Thanks a million gals !

Silicone moulds immediately captured my heart ever since they made their way onto the market a few years ago. Unfortunately they are much, much more expensive as compared to those cast-iron moulds. The first time I ever saw a silicone mould was 6 - 7 years back ( damn, it took that long to have my own silicone mould? Shame on you ! Shame on you! ) when my Russion colleague bought one from Isetan. It was a bright red bundt mould which left me so confused when I've been told that we can bake cake in it. Silly me !

By looking at it, one would never expect it can be used in an oven - at least that's how I felt the first time I saw it. A silicone mould looks just like any other plastics you've seen before except for its flexibility & elasticity. Apparently this silicone baking mould can withstand temperature up to 260 Deg. C and extreme temperature changes, so you can take it from the freezer & put in the oven right away. Brilliant isnt it?

What I love the most about this moulds (beside its bright colours) is their flexibility. With a silicone mould, you dont need greasing anymore. They are so flexible that you could just peel them away from whatever you are cooking, be it a cake or a pie. Their flexibility makes storage much easier - all you have to do is to simply roll it up in the drawer when you are not using it.

So to those who didnt have these moulds yet should give it a try. If you cant afford it, hint your friends to get them for your birthday - works well for me !!!

Kan Aku Dah Kata...

Entry kali ni khas untuk my BFF - Mimi Suryana Abdul Rahim ( siap nama penuh lagi hehehe). I've been telling her for so many times but she refused to believe me just becoz she's head over heels in love with him - in denial la tu, which is quite normal.

When you love somebody, everything about him seems perfect and flawless. No matter how hard people try to convince you about the not-so-good things about him doesnt seems to register in your mind. And that's exactly what happen to my Mimi friend......hikhikhik.

Mimi dearie, udah ku bilang sama lo...namanya Haron tapi lo nggak mau percaya....lo bilang gue dengki. The truth has finally prevailed ........taraaaaaa :

See, at least I was a bit kind by saying that his real name is just Haron instead of Mat Haron hahahaha. Ku sangka Aaron rupanya Mat Haron !!!!  Klas kau Haron !!!

As I am writing this, I am sure lots of other Harun out there wants to be called Aaron by now - the glamour version for Haron. But then, what's in a name? Maybe unless you a hot celeb like this Mat Haron !

Pathetic !

It has been quite a while I didnt bitch write about guys. It's not that they've already turned smart or their egos suddenly shrunk but I just couldnt care less talking about things nobody could ever change no matter how hard they tried. Men would always be men & there's a reason why God made them that way, I am sure.

Anyway, today I am gonna beat the norm by talking about them - I just need some umphh to this boring & sleepy afternoon & bitching about guys would surely gives me that boost without a doubt.

Men - they just get older by the years but growing up? Never. They can be as old as 40 or 50 but they still think & act like a 10 year old boy. The things they did & said can sometimes left you totally confused. Your mind just couldnt figure out how a grown up could performed such an act. But then it all slowly come back to your senses the moment you realized that you are actually dealing with no other than MEN.

A friend of mine recently passed my number to a friend of his hoping that something will took off between both of us - well, thanks to his good intention. The guy then called me up & we spoke for 15 mins the most. Then followed by texting the day after. So, that's the length of our relationship by far - 2 days old, 1 phone call & few text messages. Therefore nothing much I could tell about him except for the slang when he spoke in English, which I believed was fabricated just to impress me ( OMG I am so evil kan?)

Then that's about it. He didnt call / text and neither do I ( why should I, anyway?). After for about 3 weeks of going AWOL, out of the blue he sent me an sms. In his sms, he was apologizing to me as he's about to undergo a surgery. His sms left me completely clueless. What was that, I asked myself. And the only realistic answer my mind could figure out is that he's just one desperate man seeking for an attention. How sad....

Coming from a 47 year old man - it is ridiculously stupid isnt it? What's wrong with men these days? Why cant he just dial my number & call me instead? Isn't that more appropriate rather than sending a pathetic sms like that?

Well, a bimbo would answer the sms like this :

OMG baby, are you sick? muahhh I miss you....

Whereas a normal, decent lady would text him this :

I am sorry to hear that...hope you'll get well soon.....

But coming from a skeptic bitch like me, I would just ask him this :

Do you think I even care ???

Hence, I decided to just delete the sms & forget about it !

I'm Backkkkk !!!!

Oh yes, I am back & I hope this time it’ll be forever ( cant believe I have the guts to actually say this duhhhh).

So what brought me back to this wonderful, beautiful, awesome-ful blog? It’s not that I’ve forgotten about it – tempat jatuh lagikan dikenang, ye tak? Though I didn’t write anymore for the past few months ( 5 months to be exact) I would still visit Red Scoot On The Move every now & then just to admire my own writings hahaha – especially those parts where I bitched about guys - they are all so inspiring, I must admit !

This morning I receive an sms from an unknown number asking me to update my blog. Guess who was that? Apparently this guy was blog walking & bumped into Red Scoot On The Blog – and obviously he knows it’s mine (who wouldn’t when I have all my pics splattered all over it hahaha). The scary part is that this guy is actually staying in the same apartment I am staying !!! Die lorrr……

The moment I knew it was him, my mind starts working at its superfast rate thinking have I wrote anything about my fellow neighbours? Yes? No? Maybe…..huhuhu. But at least nothing bad about him J. Well, like the world we’re staying in, the internet world is not that big either after all.

So, what actually happen to me? What makes I lost that blogging mojo? Apart from the huge dose of laziness that has been comfortably inhabiting my body, I'll put the blame on the late Steve Job. If it’s not becoz of him, IPad & IPhone wouldn’t have been created. And if & only if those two gadgets were not around, I wouldnt have been too occupied that I could actually deserted my beloved blog.

It all started with my obsession with first, IPad then followed by IPhone. I spent most of my time with these 2 gadgets - playing games, browsing the hundreds of apps in the Apple Store and after I got my phone, I was hooked up with WhatsApp Messenger - credits to Mimi & Mantong for their participation...hurrahhhh !!!

If I were to write down everything that has been happening for the past 5 months, it'll be one hell of a long post for sure. Hence, I'm juz gonna make a summary of it ....and just for the record - I didnt get married hahaha :

1) I've finally found the love of my life - with Iphone & IPad, who needs a man ?

2) Emptied my savings by revamping my apartment - a total blessing in disguise that I dunno whether to laugh or to cry. Knowing that I am so vulnerable, I shoudnt have spent so much time with Mantong who has been very busy renovating his newly bought condo. That's me - I got very easily influenced especially when it comes to damaging myself huhuhu.

Ada macam dalam majalah Impiana tak? #mode perasan

3) My buddy, Farrah finally got married to her Mauritian fiancee - congrats darling, am so happy for you ! I should start planning my hols to Mauritius now that I have free accommodation over there wooo hoooooo !!!

The happy couple - cepat2 dapat baby, k !

4) Me & my bro - we finally took the U-turn & revived our brother-sister relationship for good. I've been missing you Long & I'm so glad you're back into my life again. Syukur, alhamdulillah.

5) My BFF, Carol left to join another company - good for her ! Only thing is that I've been missing her so much ever since....huhuhu. No more taking self obsessed pics in the morning...no more shopping trips to pav/klcc/bb plaza...... no more guy-bitching session throughout the day.... damn, I missed you girl !

Darling, I had hard times looking for our best pics together since all of them are simply gojez

6) I am officially 42 years old as of last week - wiser & one year older but STILL a head turning chick wooooo hoooooo !!!

7) Volunteered myself to be part of my apartment's management committee - which took most of the very limited free time I had. Something to give back to the community - at least.

8) My BFF, Jamie is now my housemate on a temporary basis till she moves into her new apartment next month - I just wish she could stay forever with me.

My cute housemate....love u muahhhhhh !!!!

All and all, life has been great and I am counting my blessings. Praise to Allah. Though my parents are 200++ km away, I am so lucky I have good friends around me who would be there for me when I need them. Like a friend of mine said, we should live this life with zest & enthusiasm....and for me, my friends are that zest of my life ! Alhamdulillah.

Lets cherish whats yesterday and enjoy whats today as tomorrow is still out of sight....

Got Nothing To Worry & I'm Worried !

I woke up from sleep the other morning with a complete empty & blank mind, which somehow or rather confused me. Here's the thing....everybody worries on one level or another. Being a working mother & a single parent at the same time, I have more things cluttering my mind every now & then. It could be just an unwashed laundry or unpaid bills but there's always something up there to occupy my mind.

So when I woke up that morning with nothing to worry about, it worries me. Hah ! How ungrateful I am, isnt it? For a few seconds I sat on my bed thinking very hard, what should I be worried about for that day. There must be something, I thought......how can it not be a single thing in my head right now? Am I having an insomnia here or God had suddenly decided to be kind to me.....

I am not saying I'm a worry wart here. Though I worried that much, I am still in full control of it. Much of the time I worry because of the little control I had over a possible outcome. Worrying that my preferred outcome wouldnt come about.

But then, funny enough I could actually worrying over nothing. Have you ever experience this where you'll be having this unpleasant feeling in you & your heart will be thumping a 'lil bit faster than normal but you dont even know what the shit you are worrying about? Boy, I hate it when that happen !

Anyway, worry no more. By end of the day, I have at least 3 things to worry about.

At least I know I am still normal !

My Downloading Addiction

It all started a couple of years ago when I was first introduced to Lime Wire. At that time, I only knew how to download songs and it'll only be 3 to 4 songs a week. Then , came a better and superior software called Ares who could do more than just downloading songs. I was thrilled for now I could download more stuff from the net.

After some time using Ares I got bored. I just cant tolerate the slowness of it. 1 movie took a few days to be completed and that's if I'm lucky. Otherwise, I would have to wait for weeks to finish one miserable movie.

I then got lucky as I discovered Torrent. Torrent is simply magic. It's fast & furious just like my hero, Van Diesel (except for that sexy voice of his, of course). With Torrent, not only songs & movies, software and documents are also downloadable. Now that's what we called awesome !!!

With the existence of Torrents, all hell breaks loose. I started with 1 - 2 movies in a week. Then the numbers increase rapidly to 3 - 4 movies a week. Now that I'm using Wi-fi, it gets much better where 7 - 10 movies a day is like a flick of a finger. Kacang putih !

New movies will take some time before they are available in the DvDrip version. In between waiting & downloading all these new movies, I'll browse from the net for the list of the top movies all the way from the 70s up till the 90s. Since I've been downloading for a few years already, the number of movies to download are getting lesser. I used to check the movie's rating before downloading it where I only go for the good rating ones only. Now that the choices have becoming limited, I dont bother checking already. Well, beggars cant be choosers, isnt it?

To date, I have at least 500 movies in my collection. I have two external HDD to store my collections of which one is already full and the other is three quarter full ~ sigh~ But that wont stop me from downloading....no I wont... I'd buy the 3rd HDD if I have to !

All those movies I've downloaded,I dont even know when I'm gonna watch it....no, no...let me rephrase that. I dont even know whether I'm gonna watch it. I am never a fan of a TV, let alone spending 1 - 2 hours in front of it watching movies. Honestly, I dont really have the intention to watch them all.

Last month I bought an Ipad and it seems that my addiction has gone up to another level. From the day I bought my Ipad, I have already download more than 50 apps in my Ipad. Like the movies, I dont actually used those apps I've downloaded.

The thing is, I just love to download. People might call me a chronic downloader but the name doesnt matter me at all coz I am that. I must admit that downloading makes me feel good......no, it makes me feel really good. It's like a stream of happiness that flows into my system that makes my eyes sparkled and my heart bloomed.

I supposed I could have a problem, but I dont think it is so wrong. I mean, the facilities are there to be utilised, dont just look at it.....used it ! I dont think I would be true to myself if I didnt download ....oh sweet downloading. I crave downloading, I need to do it, and if I dont get to do it, I will......okay, you got me ! I do have a problem. What's that? I forgot to say what? Owh, right.... Hi, my name is Intan and I am a chronic downloader ( This is the part where you say, "Hi Intan...." - all in a monotone voice ).

I know I am not the only one who is suffering from this addiction. And I also know that there will come a time where I'll be running out of movies to download. But before that day arrives, let me savour every seconds of it.

Nasi Vanggey a.k.a. Nasi Ganja

I did sumthing crazy yesterday ( tell me sumthing new! ). It's the same craziness I did a couple of years ago when I actually went al the way to Taiping just for for a bowl of mee udang. There's no compromise when it comes to good food - at least that's how I felt.

Anyway, you only live once and the time spared is very limited. So, live your life to the fullest. Do things you've always wanted to do. Follow your heart though all the people around you say you're crazy. It's better to look back at your past and say, " I can't believe I did that......" rather than "I wish I did that......"

I am lucky I have enuff of crazy people around me who are always willing to jump into the same ship with me to do some crazy stuff together......well, birds of the same feathers, they flock together-gether, isn't it? So, yesterday a few crazy birds from KL apparently flew to Ipoh for some good stuff for the tummy.

I've heard and read about Nasi Vanggey a.k.a. Nasi Ganja before and I'm sure most of you, readers have heard of it as well. Vanggey in Tamil means "come here" which denotes the situation of the restaurant where people keep on coming back for their food. It's like they are addicted to it the same way people are addicted to cannabis and that's how the name Nasi Ganja came from.

I've made an attempt to come here few years ago but to no avail since it was already closed when we got there. This time around however, I am not letting the same thing happen - no banana tree should bear it's fruits for the second time .....hehehe.

It all started when my fren, Mantong posted in status in FB about his craving for Nasi Ganja. The moment I saw his status, I jumped to the opportunity and offered myself to join him for a plate of Nasi Ganja. We then set the time, date and asked another fren of ours to tag along.

Marsya hogging the Ipad

So last Saturday, the four of us ( including my dearest Marsya ) heads to Ipoh to experience the tastiness of the infamous dish ourselves. We got there by lunch time and was greeted by restaurant that was already 3/4 full with patrons. A big Nasi Vanggey signboard was displayed at the entrance of the restaurant which gave me an assurance that it is indeed the correct place.

Free wi-fi lagi !

The restaurant was big with an open concept where it doesnt have walls but only ceiling on top. It is a self service restaurant where customers have to queue up to buy the food. Since we arrived at lunch time, the queue was quite long - at least 7 - 10 feet long. As Mantong been there before, we gave him the full authority to choose the dishes. We ended up with plain rice with fried hot n spicy chicken and beef cooked in hot n thick gravy.

The verdict. : between the chicken and beef, I'd choose the chicken though beef has always been my favourite as compared to chicken. Reason being, the chicken is hot in taste while the beef is a bit sweet for me. I've tried other Indian food before but this particular ones is a bit different from the rest. Theirs are more spicier and hotter which I guess was their uniqueness that brought people back to their restaurant.

Mantong's THE man !!

All in all, I liked and enjoyed their food but to drive all the way to Ipoh just for a plate of it, that is something I would really consider. But then, as how Mantong puts it : "it's not the destination but the journey that matters" which is very, very true since all four of us had a hell of a great time along the journey.

We talked, we laughed (so hard that it hurts our stomach), we teased, cursed each other and not forgetting dreaming about spending our old age together in Temerloh which was the highlight for the day.

To Mantong and Jamie, thanks a lot for sharing your precious Saturday with me and my daughter. That was one great and wonderful experience I'd cherish for the rest if my life.
